The nine-year-old U10 Girls Chess Champion will represent South Africa at the Africa Youth Chess Championship and World Youth Chess Championship in 2026.
Johannesburg, South Africa (05 May 2026) – South African junior chess champion Raegan Morgan is preparing to take on two major international tournaments after earning selection to represent the country on the global stage.
The nine-year-old from Johannesburg was recently crowned the country’s U10 Girls Chess Champion after winning this year’s SA Close tournament. This is a South African premier invitation-only chess competition for the nation’s top young players.
Her victory secured qualification for two prestigious events on the international chess calendar: the Africa Youth Chess Championship in Uganda from 14 to 23 May 2026, and the World Youth Chess Championship in Georgia from 15 to 28 June 2026.
For Raegan and her family, the achievement marks another exciting milestone in a journey that started as a simple extracurricular activity before quickly growing into a serious passion.
Over the past few years, Raegan has dedicated herself to improving her game through hours of training, practice sessions and tournament competition, steadily building a reputation as one of the country’s brightest young chess talents.
While chess is often viewed as an accessible sport at a recreational level, competing internationally comes with significant financial demands. Coaching, tournament entry fees, travel, accommodation, uniforms and other expenses have all become part of the journey as Raegan continues to compete at higher levels.
Her family shared that participation in just three tournaments between December 2025 and March 2026 cost more than R50 000.
Now, with back-to-back international tournaments approaching, the financial pressure has increased even further.
“This is the reality behind chasing her dream and why we are reaching out to partners who believe in her potential,” the family shared.
Despite the challenges, Raegan’s family remains incredibly proud of what she has achieved at such a young age and hopes more people will rally behind her journey as she prepares to represent South Africa internationally.
