October is Menopause Awareness Month.
Perimenopause symptoms can show up as sleep problems, which also affect mood, weight gain, and intense hot flashes years before your actual menopause begins. For black women, these symptoms may intensify, particularly with a lack of healthcare intervention, including for depression-related symptoms. Women can practice better perimenopausal health by tracking their symptoms, noting how they connect to their periods, and scheduling primary care visits to ensure these signs aren’t hiding with other health concerns such as autoimmune diseases or clinical depression.
Perimenopause depression can occur 40% more often than in women in pre- or postmenopause, according to Harvard Health Publishing. It shows that this time of life doesn’t just affect a woman physically, but also may create cognitive and emotional concerns. Focusing on individual changes can ensure Black women get the appropriate care.
