(AURN News) — More than 8 million Americans have lost health insurance over the past year, according to new federal enrollment data and an analysis by the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families.

The figures show enrollment in Affordable Care Act marketplace plans has dropped by 4.2 million people since 2025, while another 3.8 million people have lost Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program coverage.

Democrats are blaming President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans, arguing last year’s sweeping health care law reduced Medicaid spending and allowed enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits to expire. They say those changes have driven up insurance costs and pushed millions of Americans off coverage.

Republicans have defended the law, saying it reins in government spending and reforms Medicaid. Democrats warn the impact will grow as additional provisions, including new eligibility rules and work requirements, continue to take effect.
