As part of commemorating its 40th Anniversary the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has awarded a special certificate and plaque to the Executive Director of the Journalists’ Environmental Association of Tanzania (JET), John Chikomo.

The accolade was presented to Chikomo by Prime Minister, Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba during the ceremony to mark the four decades’ milestone of the National Environment Management Council (NEMC).

He pointed out that JET, which has members all over the country, has been at forefront in implementing the National Environment Policy through empowering local scribes to relay their reports to members of the public and helping to raise mass awareness.

The event to mark the 40th Anniversary of NEMC also coincides with the UN World Environment Week, which climaxes with a grand National ceremony to be held in Dodoma on the 5th of June 2026.

But coincidentally, just like NEMC the Journalists’ Environmental Association of Tanzania is also about to celebrate its 40th Birthday.

“They say life begins at 40 and sure enough with this award, JET has been challenged to work even harder to ensure that the future is even more productive than the past,” the Executive Director added.

Meanwhile, towards the United Nations (UN) World Environment Day, which climaxes on the 5th of June 2026, Tanzania plans to observe the events at the nation levels in Dodoma region, where the new National Strategic Sustainable Environment Transformation Program is expected to be officially launched.

Through the program, Tanzania intends to invest in Solid and liquid waste recycling to create jobs for the young people in the country, thus solving the unemployment problem in Tanzania while also addressing environmental issues.
