Parliament Approves Nabbanja as Prime Minister

Parliament has vetted and approved Kakumiro District Woman MP, Robinah Nabbanja, as the Prime Minister of Uganda.

Her approval follows her appointment by President Yoweri Museveni, in line with Article 108A(1) of the Constitution, which requires parliamentary vetting before assumption of office.

The motion for her approval was moved by Lira City Woman MP and Minister of Health, Jane Ruth Aceng, who praised Nabbanja’s leadership track record.

Aceng noted that during her previous tenure as Prime Minister, Nabbanja demonstrated exemplary performance in managing government business in the 11th Parliament.

“She has been a pioneering and inspirational leader, being the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of Uganda,” Aceng said.

Over the last five years, Nabbanja has been credited for strengthening coordination between ministries, departments, and agencies, ensuring smoother implementation of government programmes. Her office played a key role in monitoring flagship initiatives such as the Parish Development Model and wealth creation programmes aimed at improving household incomes.

She also spearheaded government efforts in responding to national emergencies, including coordinating relief interventions during floods and other disasters across the country. Her leadership in Cabinet and Parliament has been instrumental in fast-tracking government business and ensuring timely presentation of key policies and budgets.

Nabbanja further championed accountability among public institutions, often tasking ministers and technocrats to deliver on set targets. Under her stewardship, the Office of the Prime Minister enhanced its oversight role, particularly in tracking service delivery and addressing bottlenecks affecting implementation of government projects.

However, Kalungu West MP Joseph Ssewungu challenged the Prime Minister to take a firm stance on absenteeism among ministers, urging her to ensure improved attendance and accountability in the House.

Following a heated debate, 320 MPs voted in favour of the motion, six opposed it, while two abstained.
