Poor coordination between government institutions is slowing down the implementation of national development projects across the country.
Prime minister Elijah Ngurare said this on Tuesday during a meeting with local and regional councillors, as well as government officials at Gobabis.
He said ministries, agencies, regional councils and local authorities are often working independently instead of coordinating their efforts, making it difficult to fully implement projects under the sixth National Development Plan (NDP6).
“One of the shortcomings we recognise is silo management. You find that one ministry is doing its own thing while another ministry or agency is doing something different. The same trend is also happening with regional councils and local authorities,” he said.
He said many government institutions are competing against each other, describing it as selfishness.
He said these implementations are essential to saving lives, which should be the main goal, and not running marathons against each other.
Ngurare stressed that all government institutions must work together and communicate better when implementing national priorities.
“The right hand must know what the left hand is doing when it comes to the implementation of NDP6 priorities,” he said.
He also expressed concern over the current procurement system, saying it remains one of the major challenges delaying the execution of government projects.
The prime minister said he believes that improving cooperation between institutions and speeding up procurement processes will help the government deliver projects more effectively and improve service delivery to communities.
