East Africa’s first ever first Gentleman, Hafidh Ameir is dead.

Hafidh Ameir, who was the husband of Samia Suluhu Hassan passed away on Monday, the 7th of September 2026.

The first Gentleman was buried in Zanzibar in the evening of September 7, 2026.

Samia, who once served as the country’s Vice President became the Head of State in Tanzania from March 2021, following the death of the former President, John Pombe Magufuli.

Her husband’s death was officially announced by the recently named Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi.

Hafidh Ameir was an agriculturist by profession but has been keeping low profile as he was not a politician and clearly had no interest in politics.

Samia Suluhu Hassan has been married to Hafidh Ameir since 1978.

Ameir is a retired agricultural officer and academic from Zanzibar Islands.

Together they have four children, three sons and one daughter Wanu. The daughter has since joined politics and already given the position of Deputy Educxation Officer.
