Protests held outside Mauritanian embassy in Bamako amid rising tensions

Demonstrators gathered outside the Mauritanian embassy in Mali’s capital Bamako on Thursday, May 21, 2026, condemning what they described as Mauritania’s support for armed groups operating in northern Mali.

Protesters accused Mauritanian authorities of failing to prevent Malian fighters from using Mauritanian territory, arguing that such actions contribute to worsening insecurity in Mali.

Participants chanted hostile slogans against Nouakchott as tensions between the two neighboring countries continue to rise amid deteriorating security conditions in the Sahel and escalating attacks on commercial supply routes leading to Bamako.

Reports also emerged of troubling threats made during the demonstrations, with some protesters saying that “for every Malian truck burned, Mauritanian shops in Mali could be burned or closed.”

The remarks come after a series of attacks targeting Malian and foreign commercial trucks along regional transport corridors amid intensified militant activity linked to al Qaeda-affiliated groups in northern and central Mali.

No official response had yet been issued by either Mauritanian or Malian authorities regarding the statements made during the protests.

Observers warn that the escalation of public rhetoric between the two countries could deepen already sensitive regional tensions, particularly given strong economic and transport ties between Sahel and West African states.
