Only a handful of leucistic zebras have ever been documented across Africa!
Sabi Sabi, South Africa (02 June 2026) – Guests on a morning safari at Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve recently spotted a zebra foal without any black stripes…An almost entirely white zebra is among the rarest wildlife sightings in Africa!

This little one is leucistic – a rare genetic condition that disrupts the production of pigmentation, leaving the foal with barely any of the bold black stripes that zebras are known for. It’s not the same as albinism, which completely prevents pigment production. Leucistic animals often retain normal eye colour, they just have very little colour in their coat.
This little foal glows against the savannah. Like a unicorn – but it’s a zebbie!
“Moments like this remind us that the bush is never predictable. Even species we see almost every day can surprise us with something truly rare.” the reserve shares.

A zebra’s stripes happen to play a vital role in survival. As per Selati Camp Ranger Ronald Mutero, the characteristic black and white features have been shown to confuse predators when a dazzle moves together, help regulate body temperature in the heat, and even deter biting flies.
A leucistic zebra sadly loses some of those natural advantages, which is part of what makes the survival of a foal like this one incredible! This little one is over a month old now. It was first documented in early April, sticking close by the watchful eyes of its mom and the herd.
“Despite its unusual colouring, the foal remained safely tucked beside its mother, occasionally nudging her as they grazed and moved slowly across the savannah. The herd itself was relaxed, ears flicking and heads lifting occasionally to scan their surroundings before settling back into feeding.”
Leucistic zebras are extraordinarily rare. Sabi Sabi reports that only a handful have ever been documented across Africa.
“This pale zebra foal represents more than an unusual photograph – it highlights the complex genetics underlying wildlife populations. Genetic mutations such as leucism occasionally emerge in natural populations, providing scientists with insights into pigmentation biology, evolutionary pressures, and survival dynamics in the wild.”
