This little piggie is as safe and warm as can be.
Garden Route, South Africa (10 May 2026) – Land of Milk and Honey is a sanctuary based in Knysna, dedicated to the welfare of all animals in the area. It provides a safe space, especially for older rescued animals, where they can feel safe, loved, and free.
Hamlet, as the team has affectionately named him, joined the family recently. Unfortunately, improper care has led to his suffering. His hooves have grown so long, he can no longer move around properly, and he walks on his knees.
“His mom was working away and the guy that looked after him let his hooves grow to the point that he couldn’t walk. He is walking on his knees,” shares the sanctuary. “We need to get this sorted ASAP. Obviously we can only do a bit at a time because his wick is so long and needs to recede so that we can cut more off. His one hoof is also a bit infected, so we need the vet to come to him.”
Over time, and with enough support, Hamlet will get the care he needs to stand on his own four hooves again. For now, with inclement weather sweeping the Garden Route, the team made it a priority to build their newest outdoor resident a safe shelter to wait out the rain.
Working through the downpour for two days, they built a wooden shelter that no huff or puff could blow down – and it even has a window!
“My husband, Martin, rushed to get wood and nails, and they got to work right through the rain yesterday and the pouring rain today! I am so impressed with them. They know how much our animals mean to us,” the sanctuary shared.
This is Hamlet the day he arrived home. He’s now waiting out the storm, safe and dry in his little piggie palace.
