Meet Liban Ahmed Hassan: The Businessman Tipped to Become Galmudug’s Next President following a major political shift that has reshaped the electoral landscape in central Somalia. Widely known by his prominent moniker “Shuluq,” Hassan has officially emerged as the clear frontrunner in the high-stakes race for the state’s executive office. His path to the leadership vacancy was heavily solidified after he secured the formal nomination of Somalia’s ruling Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP). Local administrative analysts widely view this strategic endorsement as a direct reflection of the deep political confidence placed in him by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. As the regional election approaches, Hassan enters the contest with an immense institutional advantage, positioning him at the vanguard of the federal state’s upcoming transition.
Hassan is highly regarded as one of the most influential and affluent corporate figures in central Somalia. He has built a formidable reputation as a shrewd political investor and entrepreneur, while simultaneously managing the highly lucrative miraa (khat) trade pipelines running directly between Kenya and Somalia. Beyond his expansive commercial operations and regional infrastructure development interests, Hassan has earned widespread recognition for his active, frontline involvement in the national campaign against al-Shabaab. He is heavily credited with leveraging his substantial financial resources to mobilize local clan militias, providing his own organized men to fight in close tandem with federal government forces during intense military operations. This proven ability to organize and sustain local defense units has secured him a trusted place in President Hassan Sheikh’s inner circle of reliable allies.
Despite his strong momentum, the evolving regional election dynamics have sparked intense debate regarding democratic transparency and the impartiality of local municipal authorities. Critics and opposition members have drawn sharp comparisons to the recent South West State presidential race, where the ruling party’s preferred choice secured a definitive victory after leading rivals completely boycotted the process. It appears increasingly unlikely that an open and competitive election will take place in Galmudug, as prominent opposition figures are expected to boycott the vote over serious concerns regarding the independence of the election commission. Political watchdogs point to close personal ties between Hassan and the chairperson of the National Independent Electoral Commission, alongside President Hassan Sheikh’s clear preference for him to succeed outgoing President Ahmed Abdi Kariye “Qoorqoor”. While supporters praise Hassan as a decisive, risk-taking executive leader, his critics caution that his top-down approach can occasionally border on the naive.
