NAIROBI: PRIME Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has said Tanzania is prioritizing investment in pharmaceutical manufacturing industries to reduce dependence on imported medicines and strengthen both the health sector and the national economy.
Dr Nchemba made the remarks in Nairobi, Kenya, during a meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of the French Development Agency (AFD), Christophe Lecourtier, on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit.
He said Tanzania still imports a significant amount of medicines from abroad, prompting the government to focus on investing in local pharmaceutical industries to increase domestic drug production.
“We import a large quantity of medicines from outside the country, but we have now prioritized exploring how we can invest in pharmaceutical industries so that we can produce them locally,” said Dr Nchemba.
The Prime Minister also invited investors and development partners to take advantage of investment opportunities available in Tanzania, noting that the country serves as a strategic gateway to the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) markets.
During the discussions, Dr Nchemba commended AFD’s commitment to supporting the second phase of the Lake Victoria Water Project, describing it as a strategic initiative aimed at improving access to clean and safe water for citizens.
At the same time, he said the government continues to implement major development projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), energy projects, irrigation farming, and investment in the health sector through local pharmaceutical production.

He also thanked AFD for its continued cooperation with Tanzania in implementing various development projects and emphasized that the government remains committed to strengthening the partnership for the benefit of citizens.
“We reaffirm the commitment of the United Republic of Tanzania to continue working closely with AFD for the development and welfare of our people,” he said.
Speaking during a discussion on agricultural sector development, Dr Nchemba called on development partners to align with Africa’s priorities in order to accelerate sustainable development and strengthen the continent’s economic self-reliance.
He said it is important to focus on infrastructure investment and the transfer of modern agricultural technologies instead of continuing to rely on exporting raw materials without adding value.
“We expect cooperation in technology transfer, including the use of modern agricultural tools, extension services, and digital systems. This is no longer the time to export raw materials without processing; our focus should now be on value addition,” he said.
Dr Mwigulu Nchemba represented the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, at the Africa-France Partnership Summit held from May 11 to 12, 2026, in Nairobi, Kenya.
