Sports media is changing, and Black women are becoming an increasingly important part of that change. For decades, sports broadcasting was largely dominated by men. Today, Black women are working as reporters, commentators, analysts, hosts, producers and digital creators across professional and collegiate sports.
The growth of women’s sports is creating even more opportunities.
According to Nielsen data reported by Reuters, U.S. women’s sports generated 28.6 billion minutes of viewing during the first half of 2026, an 18 percent increase from the same period in 2025. Nielsen also
found that 122.5 million Americans were interested in women’s sports. (Reuters)
Those numbers demonstrate that audiences are paying attention.
The growth of women’s basketball, in particular, has created new opportunities for journalists who can cover athletes as more than statistics.
Black women also bring a valuable cultural perspective to sports coverage. Athletes increasingly exist at the intersection of sports, fashion, entertainment, business and social media.
A sports reporter may need to understand a player’s performance on the court while also understanding her influence away from it. That requires journalists who can tell the complete story. Black women have already demonstrated that they can do exactly that.
The next generation of sports media will need knowledgeable voices who understand both the game and the culture surrounding it. Black women are not waiting for sports media to make room.
They are helping redefine what sports media looks like.
