(AURN News) — President Donald Trump is in Beijing this morning for a high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, his first visit to China since 2017, and the timing could not be more complicated as the U.S. is now 10 weeks into a war with Iran.
China, which analysts say has been quietly helping Iran sustain its military, also holds the unique power to pressure Tehran back to the negotiating table.
Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, warned Trump in a statement, saying, “We cannot afford to trade lasting American strength for a short-term political win or to mistake a photo op for real strategic progress.”
Trump’s approval ratings have fallen to some of the lowest levels of either term, with the midterm elections now six months away — and Xi Jinping knows it.
Joining Trump on the trip is a powerhouse delegation of American tech and finance leaders, including Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg, Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser, Blackstone chairman and CEO Stephen Schwarzman, and Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins.
