Women Changing the Entertainment Industry.

Women are changing entertainment not only by appearing in front of the camera but by taking control behind it. The 2026 ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood celebration highlighted this evolution. Now in its 19th
year, the event recognized women who are expanding beyond traditional roles and gaining greater creative and decision-making authority. (Essence)

Kerry Washington is a strong example. Her career has developed from acting into producing, directing and broader creative leadership. ESSENCE describes her evolution as moving from television star to storyteller and change maker , including the launch of her own production company and expansion into
directing. (Essence)

That evolution matters because representation is not only about who audiences see. It is also about who makes the decisions.
Who gets to develop the script? Who approves the budget? Who determines which stories receive a green light? Who decides which actors are hired?

When women hold those positions, they can influence the entertainment industry at a much deeper level. The 2026 ESSENCE Festival of Culture extended that idea beyond Hollywood. Women such as Teyana
Taylor, Mara Brock Akil, Nikole Hannah-Jones and Nina Compton were selected as cultural curators, helping shape programming across music, television, literature and food. (Essence)

This is what progress can look like. Women are not simply asking to be included in entertainment. They are becoming architects of the entertainment experience itself. And for Black women especially, that means creating space for stories that may have once been overlooked.
