Young Belizean student left with injuries and a wrecked motorcycle after hit and run in Belize City

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): An eighteen year old Belize City student is nursing injuries this weekend after a hit and run on Malcolm Street left him hurt and his motorcycle badly damaged while the driver responsible fled without stopping.

Sheldon Shelby Smith of Arlington Drive was riding his 2024 black Honda CB100 motorcycle south along Malcolm Street from Trinity Street toward Freedom Street at approximately 6:10 Saturday morning May 30th when the incident occurred.

As Smith approached the intersection of Malcolm and Unity Streets a white GMC SUV pulled out of Unity Street and collided directly into the left side of his motorcycle. The impact knocked Smith off his bike and onto the paved road. He sustained pain to his left big toe, abrasions on his right ankle, right small toe and abrasions on his right shoulder.

The driver of the white GMC SUV did not stop and fled the scene. The driver remains unknown.

Smith’s motorcycle sustained serious damage including broken rear view mirrors, a broken headset, a snapped foot rest pedal and a bent handlebar.

Eastern Traffic Personnel responded after receiving a report from the control room. A medico form was issued to Smith and the scene was visited by officers. No sketch plan was drawn and no measurements were taken as both vehicles had already moved from the point of impact. Camera footage from the area has not yet been reviewed but is expected to help investigators identify the unknown driver.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information about the white GMC SUV is urged to contact Eastern Traffic Police immediately.
