Three persons engaged in illegal smuggling of cocoa from Ivory Coast to Ghana have been arrested by security operatives at Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region.

The suspects, whose names are being withheld for security reasons, were arrested with 100 bags of cocoa beans loaded on a Kia truck travelling from Ivory Coast to Ghana.

They were said to be part of cocoa smuggling syndicate operating in the Dormaa and its environs along the border in the region.

Addressing Journalists in Sunyani yesterday, the Bono Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboah, said the modus operandi of the syndicate was to divert government funds meant to pay local cocoa farmers to purchase cheap cocoa beans from their Ivorians counterparts to the detriment of Ghanaians.

“Preliminary investigations points to the fact that some License Buying Companies who have received financial support from government to purchase cocoa locally are into diverting these resources to procure cheaper smuggle cocoa from Ivory Coast, ” he revealed.

Mr Addae Akwaboah warned cocoa purchasing clerks, Produce Buying Companies and License Buying Companies who were into this illegal trade to desist from the practice before the law catches up with them.

The law enforcement operatives, he emphasised, would not spare any offending company or individual.

“These illegal smuggling activities are undermining government’s significant investments in the cocoa sector disrupting the operations of License Buying Companies!” he stressed.

“It is sad to note that some LPBCs who have been given financial support by government are actively involved in purchasing these smugglers,” he added.

He also cautioned LBCs who cheat farmers in the pricing of cocoa from the actual price GH¢2,500 per bag to desist from the act saying such Companies would not be spared when arrested.

Moreover, the Bono Regional Minister assured the public that decisive steps had been taken to investigate and clamp down on these activities saying that, they are “In collaboration with COCOBOD Anti cocoa smuggling unit and security agencies across known hot-spot in the Bono Region.”
