CARE Zimbabwe has appointed Delilah Takawira as its new Country Director, making her the first Zimbabwean to lead the organisation since it began operating in the country in 1992.
Takawira takes up the role with more than two decades of experience in the development sector, including 13 years with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and seven years working in Zimbabwe’s public and non-governmental sectors.
Her appointment reflects CARE Zimbabwe’s focus on locally led leadership and community-based development initiatives.
Throughout her career, Takawira has worked in food and nutrition security, livelihoods development and systems strengthening. She previously served on the leadership team for the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office-funded Livelihoods and Food Security Programme, which operated across 12 districts in Zimbabwe.
She also led the United States Government-funded Takunda Resilience and Food Security Activity, overseeing a consortium of eight partners and more than 120 professionals delivering programmes in resilience, nutrition, governance and risk reduction across four districts.
Takawira has been involved in efforts to expand market access, promote diversified agricultural production and strengthen food systems through collaboration between communities, government and the private sector.
She has also supported CARE Zimbabwe’s private sector engagement and blended finance initiatives, helping to establish partnerships with commercial banks, development finance institutions and UN agencies aimed at improving access to finance for rural enterprises, women and young people.
Her work linking Village Savings and Loan Associations with formal financial systems has contributed to expanding financial inclusion in rural communities.
Beyond programme delivery, Takawira has contributed to national policy and development frameworks related to food, nutrition and market systems through her work with FAO and resilience-focused programmes.
In her new role, she plans to focus on organisational excellence, digital transformation, sustainability and community empowerment as part of CARE Zimbabwe’s long-term strategy.
Takawira holds a master’s degree in nutrition from Stellenbosch University in South Africa and has a professional interest in psychology and behavioural decision-making.
