Chaka Demus Returns with Star-Studded Single
As a member of the most successful duo in dancehall history, Chaka Demus knows something about making hit songs. Recently, he came up with an idea for he and longtime musical partner Pliers to record a song with Tanto Metro and Devonte, another dynamic duo best known for the hit single, ‘Everyone Falls in Love’.
The result is ‘Jealous’, a rocking single released on May 15 by his Bright Star Production label through Tuff Gong International. The veteran toaster co-produced it with London-based Jazzwad, and is also the song’s executive producer.
It was Chaka Demus who initiated the unique “four-the-hard way” tandem, which is complemented by harmonies from Brian and Tony Gold.
“I’m very, very happy with the feedback I’m getting from all over di world,” he said.
‘Jealous’ is the lead single from ‘One Family Umbrella’, Chaka Demus’ album which is projected for release late this year. He also handles much of the production on that project, which he describes as, “a joyful celebration from start to finish.”
The album will be his eighth solo effort. On previous albums, he worked with leading producers such as Lloyd “King Jammy” James, Donovan Germain and Bonny Digital. This time around, things will be done the Chaka Demus way.
“Dis album is a direct reflection of Chaka Demus’ life an’ experiences over di years. My goal was to create a relatable, storytelling experience dat connect directly with di listeners full emotions,” he said.
Born in the Waterhouse area of Kingston, Jamaica’s capital, Chaka Demus has been telling stories for most of his 63 years. He started his career on sound systems during the early 1980s, and made his recording debut in 1985 with ‘Increase Your Knowledge’ for King Jammy.
His breakthrough came one year later alongside Admiral Bailey on ‘One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer’, another King Jammy production.
Chaka Demus’ greatest success has been with Pliers. Their careers were at a crossroads when they officially became a duo in early 1990s and worked with The Taxi Gang on what turned out to be one of dancehall-reggae’s great works.
Their album, ‘Tease Me’ produced six songs that entered the British national chart. They include the title song, ‘Murder She Wrote’, ‘She Don’t Let Nobody’ and ‘Twist And Shout’ (with Jack Radics).
That remarkable feat earned them global tours. In 2022, ‘Tease Me’ was certified platinum in the United Kingdom for sales of over 300,000 units.
