Doctors Sound the Alarm on Aging, Diabetes and Smoking at Major Saint Lucia Medical Conference

The future of healthcare in Saint Lucia will take centre stage this weekend as leading regional and international medical experts gather to address some of the country’s most pressing health challenges, including memory loss, diabetes, men’s health, smoking-related illnesses and evolving medical laws.

The Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA) is set to host its 22nd Annual Conference, bringing together physicians, specialists, legal experts, public health officials and healthcare innovators for a comprehensive examination of the issues shaping modern medicine.

Opening the conference, SLMDA President Dr. Merle Clarke will welcome delegates before discussions begin on how healthcare delivery, medical practice and legal responsibilities have changed across the Caribbean over the past decade. Emergency Medicine Physician Dr. Brian Charles will lead those discussions, examining major regional healthcare developments and their medico-legal implications. Representatives from the Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce will also explore the growing opportunities and challenges facing physicians operating as entrepreneurs.

A major highlight of the conference will be the keynote address by United States-based geriatrician and board-certified lifestyle medicine physician Dr. Amy Paul. Her presentation will focus on memory loss screening and the increasingly important role clinicians play in supporting an aging population.

The agenda also places significant emphasis on issues affecting everyday life in Saint Lucia. National Insurance Corporation Communications Officer Joele Auguste-Alexander will provide guidance on national sick leave certificate requirements, while Internist Dr. Aylwin Benjamin and General Practitioner Dr. Kyra Joseph will examine the importance of targeted H-pylori screening and its implications for public health and the island’s food industry.

Men’s health will feature prominently, with Urologist and Andrologist Dr. Joachim Jimie addressing often-overlooked challenges including infertility, priapism and sexual health complications experienced by individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease.

The conference will also bridge medicine and law. Officials from the Ministry of Justice, forensic specialists and international medical experts will guide participants through the legal preparation of birth and death certificates, the role of forensic science in healthcare investigations and the clinical considerations involved in determining when post-mortem examinations are necessary.

Diabetes prevention and management—one of Saint Lucia’s most significant public health concerns—will receive special attention. Dr. Aylwin Benjamin and Dr. Anya Williams will present strategies aimed at predicting and preventing diabetes, while pharmacist Mark Benjamin will demonstrate how Continuous Glucose Monitoring technology can improve patient outcomes through more precise monitoring and treatment.

Healthcare innovation will also be a central theme. Presentations will explore the growing role of digital infrastructure, connectivity and technology in improving healthcare delivery, alongside discussions on healthcare quality management and operational excellence.

The conference will conclude with a strong public health focus on tobacco use and smoking prevention. Millennium Heights Medical Complex Oncologist Dr. Owen Gabriel and Ministry of Health Substance Abuse Advisory Council Coordinator Natasha Lloyd-Felix will outline the health risks associated with smoking and discuss efforts to strengthen anti-smoking policies nationwide.

Organisers say the conference is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the latest knowledge, strengthen collaboration across disciplines and support the continued advancement of healthcare delivery in Saint Lucia.
