How to Have Fun Inside When It’s Too Hot Outdoors

Summer always sounds wonderful in theory. Sunshine, long evenings and outdoor adventures all seem like the things that will help us to live our best lives. That is, until summer actually comes along, and temperatures rise so high that even the thought of stepping outside, especially in the South, is enough to get you sweating.

When it gets to the point where it’s just too hot to spend much time outdoors, the boredom kicks in. The good news? Staying indoors during those blistering summer afternoons and evenings doesn’t have to be duller than paint drying. There are plenty of ways you can keep yourself entertained—not to mention cool—indoors, while the sun blisters outside.

Turn Your Home Into a Mini Cinema

One of the easiest ways to make staying indoors more enjoyable is creating a proper movie or TV marathon experience. Instead of casually half-watching random episodes while scrolling through your phone, turn it into an actual event. Choose a theme, make snacks, dim the lights, set up blankets and cushions, and watch a full trilogy or series.

Classic summer movies, nostalgic favorites, documentaries or even terrible disaster movies about climate catastrophes can all become surprisingly entertaining during extreme heat. Sometimes leaning into the atmosphere is part of the fun.

Try Games & Puzzles

Long before we had TV and the internet or even books, we had games and puzzles to keep us entertained. Although they have evolved over the years, puzzles and games are still tons of fun and can usually be played indoors in a nicely air-conditioned home.

Whether it’s board games with the family, a nice relaxed game of Solitaire online or a quiz night with family and friends, you can get tons of hours of fun out of the average game. It will also save you from endlessly scrolling social media and spiraling further and further into doom, right?

Get Creative

Hot weather can actually be a great excuse to spend time on creative hobbies that often get ignored during busier periods. Ideas include drawing or painting, writing, photography editing, craft projects, journaling, learning music, DIY home décor and baking.

Creative activities help pass time while giving the brain something more satisfying to focus on than repeatedly checking weather apps in disbelief. Trying something new can also make indoor time feel more rewarding rather than simply waiting for temperatures to become survivable again.

Rearrange or Refresh Your Space

If you’re stuck indoors, it can be pretty satisfying to do what you can to improve the environment that is immediately around you.
Small home refreshes like reorganizing shelves, decluttering, rearranging furniture and updating your home decor can all make rooms in your home feel more stylish, comfortable and even cooler and fresher. Depending on what you do, if you have the air-con turned up, you won’t even break a sweat.

Learn Something New

Indoor days can also become opportunities to learn new skills or explore interests that usually get postponed. Online courses, podcasts, tutorials, documentaries and educational videos make it easier than ever to learn from home. Whether it’s cooking, language learning, fitness knowledge, history, psychology or random deep dives into obscure topics at 2 p.m. for absolutely no practical reason, learning keeps the mind active and engaged.

Not every hobby needs to become a side hustle either. Sometimes learning purely out of curiosity is enough.

Cook or Experiment With Food

Cooking indoors can actually be pretty enjoyable when it’s hot outside, especially if you learn new, cold recipes like gazpacho, smoothies and iced drinks, salads and sorbets, which will cool you down once they’re done.

Trying new recipes is not only a fun use of time, but it’s one that feels productive and rewarding. You’ll also be really popular at the next gathering when you show off your newly found iced-coffee making skills.

Have a Relaxation Day

Sometimes the best way to handle extreme heat is simply slowing down properly. Hot weather naturally drains energy levels, and many people feel guilty for being less productive even when temperatures are genuinely exhausting. Taking a slower day indoors can actually help both physically and mentally.

Relaxation ideas include reading, listening to music, taking naps, meditation, gentle stretching, spa-style self-care and journaling.
Rest is not laziness. Occasionally your body genuinely just wants to survive temperatures that feel personally offensive.

Exercise Indoors Carefully

If you’re one of those people who start climbing the walls when you have to stay indoors for more than an hour at a time, then exercise can be a great way to kill some time. It’s probably safer to be active indoors in a cool room than it is to try and even walk around outside.

Yoga, Pilates, light strength training and dance workouts are all great fun in the confines of your air-conditioned home. The key is avoiding excessive exertion when temperatures are already placing strain on the body.

Socialize Heat-Free

Staying indoors does not mean isolating yourself completely. Invite friends over for games, films, food or relaxed evenings inside. Virtual calls, online gaming or indoor gatherings can still provide social connection, while avoiding uncomfortable outdoor conditions.

Some of the best summer memories actually happen indoors while everyone collectively complains about the heat together with a fan to keep them cool.
