By Zoila Palma: Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett welcomed a group of young female honorary diplomats today as part of activities marking the International Day for Women in Diplomacy, observed annually on June 24.
The courtesy call formed part of the “Diplomat for a Day” initiative, which gives young Guyanese women the opportunity to shadow heads of diplomatic missions and gain firsthand experience in the field of diplomacy.
The initiative, organized by The Imperial House in Guyana, brought together 12 young women between the ages of 17 and 30 from secondary schools, the University of Guyana, and public sector agencies.
This year’s program was supported by the High Commission of Belize, the High Commission of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the Embassy of Suriname, the Embassy of Mexico, and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture.
During their visit to the CARICOM Secretariat, the participants met with Dr. Barnett and senior officials who shared insights into their professional journeys and discussed the role of women in diplomacy. The young women also engaged with Programme Manager for Youth Development Michele Small-Bartley, who highlighted opportunities available through initiatives such as the CARICOM Young Professionals Programme.
In addition, Director of the CARICOM Single Market, Gladys Young, conducted a session on the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), while the participants also took part in educational activities and a tour of the Secretariat.
The group was accompanied by Belize’s High Commissioner to Guyana, Gale Miller-Garnett, and Executive Director of The Imperial House, Wasim Khan.
