Acting President Delcy Rodríguez says at least 164 people have been killed and nearly 1,000 injured, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue efforts continue, BBC reports.
Emergency teams are still searching through rubble in the capital and the coastal state of La Guaira, where the United Nations reports more than 100 buildings have collapsed. Dramatic footage shows residents fleeing collapsing structures as thick dust clouds fill the streets, while survivors describe terrifying moments as buildings shook violently and homes were reduced to debris.
International leaders have begun offering support and solidarity, with several countries pledging assistance as search-and-rescue operations intensify.
