Matinyarare visit raises storm at DISCO as Chinese boss is accused of backing anti-CAB3 efforts

DINSON Iron and Steel Company (DISCO) chief executive officer (CEO) Benson Xu, could find himself in a fix following reports that he hosted new government critic Rutendo Matinyarare late last year at Manhize Steel Plant.

Matinyarare’s visit and claims that he held meetings with a select group of villagers picked by a senior executive at the steel plant, have further fueled Xu’s situation.

Xu is now being accused of political interference.

Matinyarare, once one of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s unwavering supporters, has turned a new leaf and is strongly campaigning against a constitutional amendment that will keep him in power to 2030.

“Matinyarare was hosted by the CEO and had meetings with some villagers who were invited by a senior member of management here,” said a source at the facility.

“The assumption is that Matinyarare was here to source for funds to finance campaigns against Constitutional Amendment Bill No.3 (CAB3), and Xu is now being seen as taking a position regards this constitutional change.”

Public Relations manager Joseph Shoko said he was not aware of the allegations being leveled against Xu.

“I’m m not aware of these allegations and will need time to consult with colleagues,” said Shoko.

The Manhize Steel Plant is one of Zimbabwe’s flagship investments over the past ten years, with expectations high that it will be Africa’s largest steel manufacturer.

It is owned by global steel giant Tsingshan Holding Group.
