Monchy Jazz, one of Saint Lucia’s most beloved community events, has been paused for 2026 as rising costs and dwindling sponsorship make it increasingly difficult to sustain.
The announcement, made by Gros Islet Parliamentary Representative Kenson Casimir during Monday’s pre-Cabinet press briefing, confirms that organisers have opted to step back this year after weighing the financial realities behind the long-running free showcase.
Casimir revealed that while Monchy Jazz has grown into a flagship event within the Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival calendar, its defining feature, free access, has become its greatest challenge. He explained that the event was originally designed to give people who could not afford main stage tickets an opportunity to experience jazz, but maintaining that model is now under serious strain.
“What has happened over the years is we have had a number of people that would previously volunteer ask for compensation… so we have a price tag of between 175,000 and 200,000 dollars for an event,” Casimir said, pointing to a sharp increase in operational costs.
The Minister noted that sponsorship has not kept pace with those rising expenses. With multiple community events competing for limited corporate support, organisers were unable to secure funding anywhere near the required threshold. At the same time, growing expectations for payment from stagehands to performers have further driven up costs, eroding the volunteer-driven foundation that once made the event viable.
Casimir also moved to shut down speculation that the event had been relocated, dismissing circulating claims as unfounded. “That is just rumour,” he stated.
Despite the setback, organisers are positioning the pause as a strategic reset rather than an end. Casimir indicated that the team will use the break to revisit the event’s structure, explore new funding avenues, and potentially scale elements of the production.
“The organisers have decided that this year we will definitely sit down at the drawing table… and come back next year stronger,” he said.
