By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police say they have identified a person of interest and a vehicle of interest in the murder investigation of Dr. Naum Bonilla, who was gunned down in Belmopan last week.

Dr. Bonilla was killed on Friday, May 29, 2026. Bonilla was driving along Ramirez Avenue when his vehicle was overtaken and blocked by another vehicle. An armed man then reportedly exited and opened fire, killing him at the scene.

Police have previously said they are pursuing two possible motives but have declined to disclose them to avoid prejudicing the investigation. Public reports also noted that investigators recovered surveillance footage believed to be important to the case.

During Monday’s briefing, ASP Stacy Smith said police have made progress in identifying both a vehicle and a person of interest.

Asked whether the murder may be connected to business dealings, Smith declined to confirm, saying investigators are still pursuing the matter.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness has condemned Dr. Bonilla’s killing, describing him as a dedicated medical professional who served at the Western Regional Hospital and whose death is a major loss to Belize.

No arrests have been announced.
