A fraudster pretending to be from Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) is targeting the public, calling them with a fake promotion.

The scammer, who said his name is Simon Petrus, is alleging that MTC customers have been entered into a draw to win N$5 000 after recharging their cellphone airtime.

Victims are then asked to provide banking details including card numbers, expiry dates and their three-digit card validation code, supposedly in order to receive the prize they have won.

The customer is also told rhey would get to be interviewed on radio as part of the prize package.

An employee from The Namibian has been targeted.

The number used for the scam is 081 448 7831.

MTC spokesperson Erasmus Nekundi, however, said the company does not have any draws or prices to be won, and it does not have anyone by that name.

“It is a scam, we do not have such draws,” he said.

The public is advised not to give personal and banking details to anyone, and to confirm with their banks or the company or person being impersonated to avoid losing money to scammers.

Scammers have been targeting the public for years telling them of free data, money and phones. Sometimes they claim people have won prizes to steal personal and banking details.

MTC notes that its only official number for competitions is 081 888 200
