SPYL leader demands urgent meeting over NYC chaos

A Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) central committee member has called for an urgent extraordinary meeting of the youth league’s central committee following the chaotic National Youth Council (NYC) general assembly that was cancelled at Swakopmund last week.

Willem Amutenya in a letter says a meeting is necessary to address growing public claims linking SPYL members and senior party leaders to the disruption of the assembly.

The assembly, held from 18 to 21 June, was called off by education, innovation, youth, sport, arts and culture minister Sanet Steenkamp after proceedings descended into chaos.

Amutenya says a wave of media reports and public commentary has sought to politically associate SPYL and some of its senior leaders with the disturbances despite the absence of any verified findings.

“This trend risks undermining the credibility of our organisation and the integrity of our comrades,” he says in a request addressed to the SPYL leadership.

He argues that the matter goes beyond procedure and carries significant political implications for the youth league, the ruling party and the broader youth movement.

According to Amutenya, the extraordinary meeting should assess the impact of the allegations on SPYL’s reputation and formulate a unified response.

He says the issue also has the potential to affect unity within the NYC and shape public perceptions of the youth league.

Amutenya has, therefore, urged the SPYL national executive committee to convene the meeting urgently in terms of the organisation’s constitution.
