STPU nabs two people allegedly involved in smuggling of 254 livestock to a neighbouring country

ARUSHA: THE Tanzania Police Force, through the Stock Theft Prevention Unit (STPU) in collaboration with the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, has arrested two suspects allegedly involved in the illegal smuggling of 254 livestock to a neighbouring country.

According to a statement issued by STPU Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Simon Pasua, the suspects were arrested in Olkesumet Village, Sinonik Ward, Longido District in Arusha Region while in possession of the livestock.

He said the seized animals include 70 cattle and 184 goats and sheep, which were being transported in violation of legal procedures.

Commander Pasua said investigations into the incident are ongoing and that legal action will be taken against the suspects upon completion of the investigation.

He also urged livestock keepers and traders in the country to adhere to established laws and regulations, including the mandatory payment of livestock transport levies, stressing that such payments are a legal requirement and not optional for livestock being transported outside the country.
