Three Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) staff members have died in a tragic road crash after their vehicle collided with an elephant along the Kampala–Gulu highway near Karuma.
The fatal accident, confirmed by police and wildlife authorities on Sunday, occurred on a stretch bordering Murchison Falls National Park, an area notorious for sudden wildlife crossings. The deceased included Robert Wamala Lumanyika.
Preliminary findings indicate the URA vehicle was heading north when it rammed into an elephant that had strayed onto the road. The impact was devastating, leaving the vehicle wrecked and killing all three occupants on the spot.
By press time, authorities had not yet released the identities of the deceased as efforts were underway to notify their families.
Security personnel, traffic police and officials from the Uganda Wildlife Authority responded to the scene and have since launched investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing danger faced by motorists along the Karuma stretch, where wildlife movements, especially at night and early morning, pose a serious risk.
Road users have long raised concerns over limited warning systems and poor visibility in the area, calling for stronger safety measures to prevent such deadly encounters.
