Trump Delays Bipartisan Housing Bill Signing Over SAVE America Act

(AURN News) — President Donald Trump canceled the signing of a bipartisan housing bill Wednesday, announcing on Truth Social just hours before the ceremony that he would not sign the measure until Congress passes the SAVE America Act.

The bill had already passed both chambers with overwhelming bipartisan support. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., had planned a noon signing ceremony in National Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol.

Trump then posted on Truth Social that the signing was “hereby canceled” and said it would not take place until Congress passes the SAVE America Act, his proposal requiring documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.

The SAVE America Act does not appear to have the votes to pass the Senate.

Republican leaders have acknowledged the measure lacks the votes to pass. Democrats are united against it, and not enough Republicans support changing Senate rules to get it through.

The housing bill would have sought to crack down on private equity firms buying single-family homes, loosen regulations to increase housing supply and address the nation’s housing affordability crisis.
