Two local rugby players face quadruple rape charges

Two rugby rugby players from Wellington in the Western Cape found themselves in the dock at the Wellington Magistrate’s Court this week, facing four counts of alleged rape.

The two athletes, whose identities are currently protected by a court order until they have formally entered their pleas, are prominent figures in the regional rugby circuit.

Their arrest has sent shockwaves through the Boland rugby community, where they were reportedly regarded as role models and rising stars.

The charges relate to alleged incidents involving four counts of rape, and apparently more changes could be added to the case.

Rugby players face further rape charges

According to preliminary court documents, the two accused initially expected to face an initial single rape charge, but this has now become four. The complainant is a 21-year-old Cape Peninsula University of Technology student.

During the appearance on Monday, the prosecution highlighted the serious nature of the offences, noting that the state would be opposing bail due to the severity of the charges and the potential for witness interference.

The defence team for the players argued for a postponement to better prepare for a formal bail application, asserting that their clients intend to plead not guilty to all charges.

Arrests made at the end of April

According to a police spokesperson, the two suspects are aged 23 and 28, and were arrested on 28 April, reportedly the day after the alleged incident.

This is a developing story, and investigations are underway.
