Uganda has registered a new Ebola case nearly three weeks after the country recorded its last confirmed infection on June 5, 2026.
The latest case brings the cumulative number of confirmed infections in the country to 20. According to sources within the Ministry of Health, the case was confirmed on Monday and, like several others recorded during the outbreak, is linked to a Congolese national.
Although the Ministry of Health has described the outbreak as being under control, the director general of health services, Dr Charles Olaro, said surveillance efforts remain active to prevent further spread of the disease.
He noted that no locally transmitted case has so far been detected within Ugandan communities. With the new infection, the number of patients currently admitted for treatment has risen to four, while nine contacts remain under follow-up.
A total of 817 contacts have completed the mandatory 21-day monitoring period and have been cleared. Health authorities also report that more than 600 alerts from communities across the country have been investigated and found not to be linked to the Ebola virus.
Uganda has so far recorded two deaths from the current outbreak involving the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. While the number of cases in Uganda remains relatively low and most infections have been imported, the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to bear a much heavier burden.
According to statistics released by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the DRC had recorded 1,003 confirmed cases by Monday. The figures indicate that the country has registered 81 recoveries and a cumulative 254 confirmed deaths, with more than 6,500 contacts listed for follow-up.
