Authorities have indicated that the son‑in‑law of Octavia Benoit, who was stabbed at her Monchy residence last month, may face an upgraded charge after the 80‑year‑old succumbed to her injuries.
Police reported that around 11:52 a.m. on January 15, 2026, officers from the Gros Islet Police Station responded to a call about a stabbing in New Development, Monchy. Benoit was found at her home with multiple stab wounds and was rushed by Saint Lucia Fire Service personnel to the Owen King European Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.
Her son‑in‑law, 51‑year‑old Bernard Andre, also known as “Korean”, of Georgeville, Castries, was arrested the same day and later charged with dangerous harm. He appeared before the First District Court on January 22 and was remanded to the Bordelais Correctional Facility.
On January 23, medical staff confirmed that Benoit had died from her injuries. She was pronounced dead at about 4:35 p.m. A post‑mortem conducted on January 26 determined that she died as a result of a stab wound to the chest.
Police have since stated that, in light of Benoit’s death, Andre’s charge could be upgraded as investigations continue.
