By Zoila Palma: On May 26, 2026, Belize officially launched its updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) during the opening ceremony of the 2nd National Biodiversity Dialogue 2026, held at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel.
The event formed part of activities marking the International Day for Biological Diversity, commemorated annually on May 22, and was held under the theme, “Acting Locally for Global Impact: Our Culture, Our Biodiversity, Our Impact.”
The launch of the updated NBSAP marked a major step in Belize’s efforts to conserve, protect and sustainably manage its biodiversity. Organizers said the revised plan also highlights the link between biodiversity, traditional knowledge and Belize’s cultural identity.
During the ceremony, CEO in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, Milagro Matus highlighted the importance of collaboration, financing and national commitment toward biodiversity conservation. Matus also officially handed over printed copies of the NBSAP to representatives from key government ministries.
The event featured a cultural dance performance by Paalil Kin Balam of San Antonio Village and presentations from winners of a biodiversity poetry competition, who received prizes during the ceremony.
The Ministry of Sustainable Development also acknowledged the support of development partners, including the Protected Areas Conservation Trust, Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future, CATIE, the Biodiversity Finance Initiative and the United Nations Development Programme.
