ON Saturday, March 14, a New Westminster Police officer was working in the Uptown neighbourhood when he was approached by a woman who shared her purse had just been stolen from her seat at a local coffee shop.

The officer went into the coffee shop to speak with staff and review CCTV footage. The officer left the coffee shop with a detailed suspect description.

Within approximately forty-five minutes, someone matching the suspect description was arrested and the purse was returned to its rightful owner.

“This underscores the importance of reporting a crime as soon as possible,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver. “This officer was able to work quickly and locate the suspect while he was still in the area.”

Purse thefts happen quickly and often victims are unaware until a significant amount of time has passed and the suspect has left the area. The New Westminster Police Department says it is raising awareness of this kind of crime so the public can take precautions when they put down their belongings.
