By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 67-year-old Belize City labourer is tonight at the Belize Central Prison after old unpaid fines caught up with him, despite receiving a non-custodial sentence for possession of a crack pipe.
Elvis Nicholas appeared in court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to possession of utensils used for smoking a controlled drug. The charge stemmed from the discovery of a black and silver metal pipe, measuring two and a quarter inches, which police say was made or adapted for use in connection with smoking a controlled drug.
After pleading guilty, Nicholas offered no mitigation to the court. He was fined $350, plus a $5 cost of court, which he was ordered to pay by July 31, 2026. In default of payment, he would serve one month in prison.
However, Nicholas was unable to pay outstanding old fines, and a committal warrant was prepared. As a result, he was sent to the Belize Central Prison to serve jail time for those unpaid fines.
