The men and women who have quietly helped transform the lives of some of Saint Lucia’s most vulnerable boys stepped into the spotlight as the Boys Training Centre (BTC) celebrated its 66th anniversary with a heartfelt staff appreciation ceremony.
Held on June 25, the ceremony honoured current and former employees whose commitment has helped establish the BTC as one of the island’s longest-serving child rehabilitation institutions, recognizing the often unseen work of guiding young lives toward brighter futures.
Assistant Manager Gabriella Sanchez described the institution’s employees as the foundation of its success, noting that for more than six decades the Centre has remained a place of care, protection and second chances because of the compassion, patience and professionalism of its staff. She said the anniversary was not only a celebration of the institution’s history but also of the people who continue to carry its mission forward.
Deputy Permanent Secretary Karen Dupre praised staff for serving as mentors, role models and protectors, emphasizing that while their impact cannot always be measured by statistics, it is reflected in restored hope, transformed lives and better futures for the young people entrusted to their care. She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting both staff and the boys they serve.
BTC Manager Leanna Wallace echoed those sentiments, describing the work as one that demands far more than professional training. She said staff members provide stability, guidance and hope to children who often need it most, making a lasting difference in their lives every single day.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of awards recognizing employees for their years of dedicated service and outstanding contributions to the institution.
Minister for Equity, Social Justice, Gender, Older Persons, Labour, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs, Emma Hippolyte, commended staff for their unwavering commitment and acknowledged that much of their work happens away from public attention. She reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening the Boys Training Centre, including improvements to its facilities, to ensure staff can continue providing quality care and guidance to the nation’s youth.
As the Boys Training Centre marks 66 years of service, the anniversary served as a powerful reminder that the institution’s greatest strength has always been its people—dedicated professionals whose compassion, perseverance and belief in the potential of every child continue to transform lives and build a brighter future for Saint Lucia.
