Business Ku Ssimu Yo Brings Digital Hope to Entrepreneurs in Isingiro

For many small business owners in Isingiro District, running a business has often meant relying on word of mouth, limited cash transactions, and uncertain access to customers beyond their immediate communities. But through the Business Ku Ssimu Yo initiative, many entrepreneurs are beginning to see how digital tools can transform the way they work, sell, and grow.

Implemented with support from Mastercard Foundation and Outbox, the initiative brought together small business owners, youth entrepreneurs, and market vendors for practical training sessions focused on digital and financial skills.

Participants were introduced to ways of using smartphones for marketing, mobile money transactions, customer communication, and promoting products online through platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook.

In trading centres and marketplaces across the district, the training created excitement among participants who said they had previously viewed smartphones mainly as communication gadgets rather than business tools. Many expressed interest in learning how to attract more customers online and improve record keeping using simple digital applications.

Women entrepreneurs formed a large number of the participants, with many highlighting the challenges they face in balancing business growth with limited access to information and digital knowledge. Through the sessions, they were encouraged to embrace technology as a practical solution for expanding their customer base and increasing daily sales.

Local facilitators also emphasized the importance of financial inclusion, encouraging participants to adopt safer and more convenient digital payment methods. Small business owners were trained on the value of separating personal and business finances, building savings habits, and maintaining customer trust through consistent communication.

Youth participants described the initiative as timely, especially at a moment when digital platforms are increasingly shaping how businesses operate across Uganda. Some said the training had inspired them to rethink how they present their businesses and engage customers beyond their local communities.

Community leaders in Isingiro welcomed the initiative, noting that many rural entrepreneurs still lack access to practical digital business knowledge despite growing smartphone usage. They said empowering small businesses with digital skills could contribute to household incomes and local economic growth.

Beyond the technical lessons, the initiative also created a space for entrepreneurs to share experiences, challenges, and ideas with one another. Participants discussed issues ranging from limited internet access to fears around online scams, while facilitators encouraged responsible and safe use of digital platforms.

As smartphones continue to become more accessible in Uganda, initiatives such as Business Ku Ssimu Yo are helping bridge the gap between traditional small businesses and the growing digital economy. For many entrepreneurs in Isingiro, the training represented more than learning how to use technology — it opened a new way of thinking about business growth and opportunity.

With growing interest from participants and local communities, the initiative reflects the increasing importance of digital and financial skills in supporting small businesses, especially in rural districts where many entrepreneurs are eager for opportunities to improve their livelihoods and adapt to a changing business environment.
