With its 1,000-capacity, Freight Brixton is London’s largest open-air rooftop, hosting a full program of events throughout the summer.
However, Brixton Buzz has been made aware of growing discontent amongst its neighbours.
We first flagged this up before the space had officially opened, but as the intensity of events increases, some locals are getting more and more frustrated with what they feel are unacceptable noise levels.
Below is a statement from a group of local residents:
“We are a group of local residents living near Freight Brixton. Since the venue began operating, we have been raising concerns about the impact of a large outdoor venue operating alongside existing homes.
Since late 2025, we have experienced repeated issues including loud amplified music, heavy bass, people using microphones, crowd noise and disturbance from events.
There have also been concerns about outdoor generators creating additional noise and disruption, including at times when the venue itself is not hosting events.
The impact has been significant, affecting sleep, working from home and the ability to relax and enjoy our homes.
We have raised concerns with our councillors, the relevant council teams, including planning and licensing.
The planning application for the venue was recommended for approval by the planning committee over a year ago, but the formal decision remains outstanding due to unresolved Section 106 requirements.
Despite this, the venue has been built and continues to operate and we are seeking clarity on how this has been allowed while the planning process remains incomplete.
The premises licence includes requirements around preventing noise nuisance, appropriate noise controls, providing a direct contact number for the premises manager and arranging monthly community engagement meetings with residents.
We have raised concerns that these measures have not been effectively implemented.
A community engagement meeting with Freight Brixton is taking place at the venue this Monday evening (29th June) following concerns raised by residents. However, we have largely been responsible for sharing details of the meeting and encouraging our neighbours to attend.
We would encourage local residents who have experienced issues, have questions or want to better understand the venue’s operation to contact Freight Brixton directly and attend the meeting to make their views heard.
We support local businesses and recognise the importance of Brixton’s continued development. However, new venues must operate responsibly alongside existing communities, follow the appropriate processes and ensure residents feedback and concerns are properly listened to.
Our aim is not to prevent businesses from operating but to ensure there is accountability, effective communication and a solution that works for both the venue and the people who live nearby.”
