International News: Iran arrives in U.S. for World Cup as peace deal announced

By Zoila Palma:  Iran’s national football team arrived in the United States on June 14 for the first time during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, landing at Los Angeles International Airport on the same day a peace deal between Iran and the United States was announced.

The team traveled from its base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, ahead of its opening Group G match against New Zealand at Los Angeles Stadium on June 15, The Straits Times report.

The Iranian squad received a warm sendoff before departing Mexico and later held a press conference in Los Angeles. Head coach Amir Ghalenoei expressed pride in representing Iran and said he hoped football would bring people together. “I hope that football will bring about joy and enjoyment, and bring closer the cultures and countries,” he said through a translator.

The match against New Zealand will take place amid heightened attention due to the recent conflict between the United States and Iran and the newly announced peace agreement between the two countries. The fixture marks a unique moment at the tournament, as the two nations work toward ending hostilities while Iran competes on American soil.

Iran moved its World Cup base camp from Arizona to Mexico in late May following joint U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28.

As a result, the team must travel from Mexico to the United States for each of its three group-stage matches. Ghalenoei said the travel arrangements and the denial of visas to some members of Iran’s football federation had negatively affected the squad.
