Trell Thomas Continues to Elevate Black Excellence Through Culture,Connection, and Community: A Toast to Beyond the Gates.

For years, Trell Thomas has created spaces where Black excellence is not only recognized but celebrated. As the founder of Black Excellence Brunch, Thomas has transformed what began as an intimate gathering into a nationally recognized platform that honors achievement, fosters meaningful connections, and amplifies the voices shaping culture.

Most recently, Black Excellence Brunch hosted “A Toast to Beyond the Gates,” a special celebration honoring CBS’s groundbreaking daytime drama. The event brought together media, talent, executives, and industry leaders to recognize the show’s impact and the importance of authentic Black storytelling in television.

In an exclusive conversation with SHEEN Magazine, Thomas reflected on the inspiration behind Black Excellence Brunch, the significance of supporting Black-led projects like Beyond the Gates, and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.

What inspired you to create Black Excellence Brunch?

Thomas credits his upbringing and the Southern Sunday dinners hosted by his parents as the foundation of the movement. “Those gatherings taught me the importance of community, connection, and celebrating one another,” he says. “I wanted to create a larger space where Black people could come together, honor our stories, celebrate our achievements, and inspire future generations.”

“Success doesn’t happen in isolation,” Thomas says. “When media outlets, community leaders, and entertainment professionals intentionally support Black-led projects, they help ensure those stories have the opportunity to thrive long-term.”

What began as a gathering has evolved into a movement centered on recognition, opportunity, and empowerment.

What defines Black excellence?

For Thomas, excellence extends far beyond accolades. “It’s about purpose, perseverance, integrity, and impact,” he explains. “It’s about people who are opening doors, creating opportunities, and making a meaningful difference in their communities.”

Why are events like Black Excellence Brunch important?

As conversations surrounding representation continue to evolve, Thomas believes intentional spaces remain essential. “When leaders from entertainment, media, business, and culture come together, opportunities emerge and relationships are built,” he says. “These spaces help transform visibility into access and access into opportunity.”

What moment reaffirmed your mission?

While the brunch has celebrated countless influential figures, Thomas says hearing personal success stories remains the most rewarding part of his work. “When attendees tell me that a connection they made at Black Excellence Brunch changed the trajectory of their career or business, that’s when I know the mission is working.”

A Toast to Beyond the Gates

Why spotlight Beyond the Gates?

Thomas says the decision was an easy one. “Beyond the Gates represents authentic storytelling that reflects the depth and complexity of Black life,” he says. “It aligns perfectly with our mission of celebrating Black achievement and elevating stories that deserve visibility.”

What does the show’s representation mean for daytime television?

The significance of the series extends beyond entertainment. “For decades, many dimensions of Black life have been underrepresented in daytime television,” Thomas says. “To see Black families, Black success, and Black culture centered in such a prominent way is both powerful and necessary.”

What has impressed you most about audience response?

According to Thomas, authenticity has been the show’s greatest strength. “People want stories that reflect their realities and aspirations,” he says. “When audiences feel seen, they become invested.”Beyond the Gates Stars Bring Black Excellence to the Brunch One of the most anticipated conversations of the afternoon came from actress Karla Mosley, who opened up about her dynamic role as Dani Dupree on CBS’ hit daytime drama Beyond the Gates.

When asked whether she had to audition for the role, Mosley revealed that the opportunity came through her previous working relationship with executive producer and writer Michele Val Jean, whom she had worked with on The Bold and the Beautiful. “She offered me the role of Dani, and at first I actually turned it down because the show films in Atlanta,” Mosley shared. “But after reading the script, I completely fell in love with the character.”

Mosley explained that Dani has given her the opportunity to explore layers she had never been able to tap into before as an actress. “I’ve never been able to dig into a character like this. She’s dramatic, passionate, and deeply loving. She loves her daughters, she loves her husband, and she’s wild. She’s also hilarious,” Mosley said. “I get to show all the facets of myself and what I can do as an actress. There was just no way I could turn this role down.”

When asked how much she relates to Dani, Mosley laughed and admitted that while they share similarities, there is one major difference. “I don’t think we’re really that different, but I’m not very glamorous,” she said. “I’m a hippie child, and Dani is very glamorous. She does not miss a beat.”

Mosley also praised the show’s talented creative team, highlighting the Black women who help bring Dani Dupree to life each day.

“The hair and makeup are off the charts,” she said. “I have an all-Black women glam squad, and they kill it every day.”

She specifically acknowledged Hair Designer and Department Head Wankaya Hingson, Makeup Designer and Department Head Stevie Martin, and award-winning Costume Designer Jeresa Featherstone. “It’s just complete Black Excellence, and I love it,” Mosley said.

Before wrapping up, Mosley teased what fans can expect from the upcoming season. “Stay tuned. Season two is going to take you on a spicy journey.”Sheen Magazine also caught up with fellow Beyond the Gates star Brandon Claybon, who encouraged viewers to get caught up on the groundbreaking soap opera before its highly anticipated return.

“It’s about to be off the charts,” Claybon teased.

When asked if he could join a remake of any classic soap opera, Claybon quickly named the iconic nighttime drama Dynasty, paying homage to legendary actress, Diahann Carroll and her trailblazing impact on television. With talent, storytelling, and representation continuing to take center stage, the cast of Beyond the Gates proved exactly why the series remains one of television’s most exciting and culturally significant shows.

Building Legacy Through Leadership

What responsibility comes with creating influential spaces?

Thomas approaches the role with intention. “The responsibility is making sure the space remains impactful and inclusive,” he says. “These environments have the power to influence careers, relationships, and future opportunities.”

What progress have you seen in the entertainment industry?

While acknowledging growth in representation, Thomas believes there is still work ahead. “We’ve seen more Black creators and executives enter spaces where they were historically excluded,” he says. “But progress also requires ownership, equitable funding, and decision-making power.”

What advice do you have for aspiring change makers ?

His answer is simple.

“Start with purpose. Focus on service before recognition. Build authentic relationships and stay committed to your mission.”

“We have to celebrate the pioneers while investing in the innovators who will shape the future,” he says. “Black Excellence Brunch has always been about bridging generations.”Looking Ahead When asked what emotions he experiences while standing in a room filled with accomplished Black leaders, artists, journalists, and entrepreneurs, Thomas answers without hesitation. “Gratitude. Pride. Inspiration.”

He hopes Black Excellence Brunch will ultimately be remembered as a platform that empowered people, created opportunities, and strengthened community. “I want the legacy to be one of connection, celebration, and impact,” he says. “Most importantly, I want it to remind people that when we invest in each other, we all rise.”

As Black Excellence Brunch continues to expand its reach, Thomas remains focused on building something larger than a single event. “My goal has always been bigger than hosting events,” he says. “It’s about creating a lasting ecosystem that celebrates Black excellence, creates access, and inspires future leaders for generations to come.” With leaders like Trell Thomas at the helm, Black Excellence isn’t simply being recognized, it’s being cultivated, celebrated, and sustained!
