Lionel Richie is taking time away from the stage after undergoing a heart procedure while in the middle of his tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.

The 77-year-old music legend was hospitalized this week due to heart-related issues, leading to the cancellation of three upcoming performances.

A representative for Richie confirmed to PEOPLE that the singer underwent a procedure to treat atrial fibrillation.

According to his representative, the procedure went smoothly, with Richie’s doctor saying everything went “perfectly.” Richie is now taking time to recover before returning to his performance schedule.

Atrial fibrillation is a type of irregular heart rhythm that can cause the heart to beat unusually fast or inconsistently. Treatment varies depending on the patient and severity of the condition, but procedures and medications are commonly used to help restore or manage the heart’s rhythm.

The hospitalization means fans planning to see Richie alongside Earth, Wind & Fire will have to wait a little longer. The next three dates on the artists’ joint tour have been canceled as Richie focuses on his recovery.
