NFP maintains Shinga must still resign from legislature

National Freedom Party (NFP) President Ivan Barnes has expressed disappointment at the court decision blocking Mbali Shinga’s removal from the legislature.

Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Thina Siwendu granted Shinga an urgent court interdict halting the NFP’s decision to remove her from the legislature after her expulsion from the party.

The order will remain in effect until Shinga has exhausted all internal appeal processes or files a review application within 15 days.

Barnes says while they will abide by the court order, he maintains Shinga should resign as MEC for Social Development.

“We are going to hold a special NEC meeting, and then we are going to adopt the order and implement the order as is. But our decision for her to resign, for her not to join the Government of Provincial Unity, still stands. We are on the opposition benches. She’s returning to work on Monday as per the court order. We are going to see who respects the NFP, or it’s about the benefits one gets when they are deployed.”
