The Deaf and Hearing-Impaired community were recently exposed to vital information about personal safety and responsibility.
This initiative, held by the Deaf Ministries Department of the Castries Seventh-day Adventist Church and the Society of the Deaf Club, featured police officers Jean James and Merlika Flavius sharing tips on how deaf and hearing-impaired individuals can better manage their lives safely in a world that often caters only to the hearing.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to connect this vulnerable group to the law enforcement entity mandated to support vulnerable groups,” Dale St. Juste, leader for the Deaf Ministries at Castries Church, told St. Lucia Times.
In a lively session, participants asked a wide range of questions and also made suggestions on how the police can better accommodate people with disabilities, particularly those with communication challenges.
Organisers encouraged the public to be kind to people with disabilities as they strive to live as normal a life as possible.
