SADC ministers meet in Zimbabwe over climate disaster threats
SADC Ministers responsible for Disaster Risk Management are meeting in Masvingo, Zimbabwe.
Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ministers responsible for Disaster Risk Management are meeting in Masvingo, Zimbabwe on Wednesday to strengthen regional cooperation on climate disasters.
The meeting comes as Southern Africa faces growing threats from floods, droughts, food insecurity and extreme weather conditions.
The Sixth Ordinary Meeting of SADC Ministers Responsible for Disaster Risk Management is focusing on improving disaster preparedness, emergency response, and long-term resilience across the region.
South Africa’s Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa is chairing the high-level meeting under the theme: “Building Back Better Together: Advancing Resilient Recovery and Sustainable Development in SADC.”
Regional leaders say climate-related disasters are becoming more frequent and interconnected, threatening livelihoods, infrastructure, agriculture, and economic development.
The meeting is expected to adopt resolutions aimed at strengthening early warning systems, humanitarian coordination, and proactive disaster management across Southern Africa.
The meeting is convened under the theme:
“Building Back Better Together: Advancing Resilient Recovery and Sustainable Development in SADC.”
The theme reflects the region’s shared commitment to resilient communities and sustainable development.
