After battling a serious spine injury in 2025, Kendra du Toit returned in style to claim four titles and the overall top female award at nationals.

South Africa (07 May 2026) – Kendra du Toit’s return to the top of South African lifesaving has become one of the standout comeback stories of the season after the Mandeville Dolphins athlete produced a dominant performance at the 2026 South African Lifesaving Championships.

Competing with the support of Team Velocity Trade, du Toit won four of her six individual pool events and finished the championships as the Overall Top Female Point Scorer.

But for her, the medals meant far more than just podium finishes. Just a year ago, she was facing one of the toughest periods of her sporting journey following a serious spine injury that left her questioning whether she would ever return to her previous level.

“There was a time where I genuinely didn’t know if I would ever get back to that level. That uncertainty was the hardest part.”

The setback forced the South African lifesaver to completely rethink her approach to competition and training. Instead of focusing only on physical preparation, she began placing greater importance on her mindset, learning how to manage pressure, doubt and anxiety differently.

“I learned how to work with doubt instead of fighting it. That shift changed everything.”

By the time the national championships arrived, she felt mentally stronger and more settled than before.

“I used to fear the anxiety that came with competition. Now, I see pressure as a privilege. It means you’re in a position that matters.”

That confidence showed throughout the championships as she raced with composure and control across multiple events.

“For the first time, I wasn’t afraid of the pain. After everything my body had been through, I was grateful to be able to push it again.”

She also credited the people around her for helping her through the difficult period, including her coach Heather Morris-Eyton, Team Velocity Trade, Mandeville Dolphins and her family.

“One of the biggest lessons I learned is that you don’t have to do it alone. Letting people in can make all the difference.”

With the World Championships now on the horizon, du Toit remains focused on continuing to improve while embracing every opportunity that comes her way.

“If you can come through it with patience and self-belief, you won’t just return, you’ll come back stronger.”
