*Tan France is back, and so is Zubair. The “Queer Eye” style guru returns for season two of the Onyx Collective comedy “Deli Boys,” and if you thought his character was done after season one, think again. France says audiences should prepare for a side of Zubair they have never seen before.
“In season one, Zubair was out to kill these people, Lucky Aunty and the Dar Boys,” France explained. “But now, well, let me start off by saying, we thought that he was gone. He was a goner. He was dead. He’s not.”
Rather than returning for revenge, the reformed antagonist has taken a spiritual turn. “He has found, not God, but something close to that for him,” France said. “He’s gone super woo zen.” While the rest of the “Deli Boys” world spirals out of control, Zubair is apparently the only one keeping his cool.
“He’s the only calm, chill character this season,” France noted. “Everybody else is getting bigger and better. The stakes are higher than ever. He’s just going real chill.”
This season finds the Dar brothers drowning in dirty cash, a casino king turned money launderer stirring up chaos, and a power-hungry D.A. eyeing the mayor’s office. “I was so happy to get that call to come back,” he said. “I loved doing season one. I can’t stress this enough. I loved season one so much.” He described the experience as “one of my greatest adult experiences.”
Part of that enthusiasm comes from his co-stars. France praised Asif Ali, Saagar Shaikh, and Poorna Jagannathan, calling them “a bunch of clowns in the very best way.” “They are just so lovely, welcoming, funny, everything that you would want on a set,” he said.
France also spoke candidly about what “Deli Boys” means to him as a British Pakistani living in America for the past two decades. “I don’t think I’d ever seen Pakistanis represented on TV outside of the news and the stereotypes that we see about my people,” he said, noting that the show’s refusal to lean on the model minority trope is what makes it special.

“They’re not doctors. They’re not pretending to be the model immigrant or the model minority,” France said. “We’re down and dirty. We are fully fledged people. We are fully formed people.” France called it a point of genuine pride to be part of a story that puts Pakistanis front and center in such an unexpected genre.
As for what Zubair truly wants beneath all that newfound calm, France explained: “I think he wants survival,” he said. “I think that he’s pretending that he’s going to be all Zen.” But if the show earns a third season and Zubair walks free from prison, France made clear the peace won’t last long. “He is ready to cut a bitch,” he said. “I know who this man is.”
All six episodes of “Deli Boys” season two premiere Thursday, May 28 on Hulu. Season one is available to stream now.
