*Gayle King is setting the record straight on a rumor that has followed her for decades. The CBS Mornings anchor sat down with Alex Cooper on the May 27 episode of “Call Her Daddy” and addressed the longstanding speculation that her friendship with Oprah Winfrey is something more than platonic.
King and Winfrey have been close friends for nearly 50 years, and the whispers about the nature of their relationship have been circulating almost as long. King traced the origins of the public gossip back to her 1993 divorce from William Bumpus, when The National Enquirer ran a story suggesting the split happened because the two women were secretly involved.
“Number one, if we were gay, we would tell you because believe me, there’s nothing wrong with it,” King told Cooper, EW reports. “It’s just, I prefer a man. So, we would tell you.”
King also opened up about the consequences those rumors had on her personal life in the years following her divorce. She said the chatter made dating genuinely difficult and that she pressed Oprah repeatedly to use her platform to shut it down.
“I would say to her, ‘You’ve got to say something on your show because it’s hard enough for me to get a date on a Saturday night and now people think I’m a lesbian, you’ve gotta say something,'” King recalled. Oprah declined each time, suggesting they simply ignore it. King’s response to that was pointed: “Well, that’s fine for you to say you have somebody. I don’t.” Oprah has been in a relationship with Stedman Graham for close to four decades.
This is not the first time both women have addressed the subject together. During a 2024 episode of Oprah’s “Moments That Make Us” series, Winfrey told Melinda Gates, “For years people used to say we were gay. We were up against that for forever. People still think that.”
