*New Orleans may soon be writing a much bigger check to keep its most iconic summer celebration in place.
Essence Festival organizers have formally asked Mayor Helena Moreno’s office for annual public funding between $10 million and $12 million, a steep climb from the approximately $1.7 million the festival currently draws from a combination of city dollars and contributions from local tourism and hospitality groups, WWLTV reports.
The funding push is tied to an ambitious vision organizers are calling “Festival 365,” framing the event not as a summer weekend but as a permanent cultural and commercial presence in the city. The timing adds urgency — the festival’s seven-year agreement with New Orleans expires this coming September.

None of the behind-the-scenes negotiations have slowed down what is shaping up to be a standout 2026 program. The concert series runs July 3-5 at the Caesars Superdome, bringing together a lineup that spans generations and genres. Cardi B, Patti LaBelle, Kehlani, Latto, Brandy, Monica, Babyface, Leon Thomas, Public Enemy, and George Clinton with Parliament-Funkadelic are all on the bill. Clinton’s night will double as a celebration, with Big Boi, Scarface, Big Freedia, Nona Hendryx, and Durand Bernarr among those joining him on stage. Doug E. Fresh takes the closing slot.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama is expected to appear over the course of the weekend, a detail that has only amplified anticipation.
The daytime experience unfolds at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center across a wide range of programming, including the Essence Food and Wine Festival, BeautyCon, AFROPUNK BLKTOPIA, the Essence Film Festival, and dedicated tracks for founders, authors, and entrepreneurs. More announcements are on the way before July, and tickets are on sale now.
